From scissors and glue to PE and AI
At the start of the century we manually cut out images and pasted them in. Then we moved to a standard Translation Memory system, followed by an advanced custom production environment, which was recently extended with limited Machine Translation functionality. Each of those phases has had a different impact on, requirements for, and expectations from linguists. We know that the future of human translation poses threats – but how about opportunities?

Maarten Milder studied translation at the University of Amsterdam and has over 40 years of experience in the localization industry, in a variety of functions on both the demand and the supply sides. Maarten has worked for companies such as AkzoNobel, INK/IBM, Digital Equipment Corporation, Dun & Bradstreet Software, Stream/Philips, and Bowne Global Solutions. He joined Medtronic’s internal translation department in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 2006.
